Recipes and Remembrance

Jake coughed as he tugged open the window of his boyfriend’s kitchen. Smoke poured out and the smoke detectors screamed in the background. Alerting the whole block to Jake's failure as Jake glared at the blackened charcoal block that was once an apple upside down cake.The thing was Jake wasn't a bad baker, he never had been, not since he was barely up to his momma's knees and he followed her around the kitchen. All baking is following instructions and Jake would have never made it in the Navy if he couldn't do that. The worst part, the thing that added insult to injury was that he'd practiced this. He'd made the damn cake four times! Four goddamn times and it's been perfect each time as he'd shared it with Javy or any of the daggers. Any of the daggers but Bradley who was clueless just the way he wanted him to be. Ugh, the surprise was ruined now. His boyfriend would be home in the next half hour to a kitchen disaster and a ruined birthday.Or Jake tries and fails to make Bradley a birthday cake.
