Summary
Every once in a while, Maya experiences a strange sensation. It has to be that—just a weird feeling—because the alternative is acknowledging that there might be more to the way she sometimes feels like she’s not supposed to exist, in the same way that she feels like she needs to cover her arms. It’s easier to indulge that other feeling, because all she needs to do is wear long sleeves (and she already likes wearing long sleeves, so it’s fine! Really!), but acknowledging the fear that she shouldn’t exist would make it much more real, and Maya’s not sure if she can handle that. But then she runs into that strange boy from Sevens, and realizes that the feeling of familiarity she gets from him seems to come from the same place as her need to cover her arms does, and by extension, the same place as the fear of nonexistence that she desperately avoids at all costs. And since she’s already diving headfirst into investigating the Joker and ‘Deja Vu Boy’, Maya is going to have to acknowledge that deep, inexplicable fear at some point—whether she wants to or not.
