Summary
There are a couple of different conclusions to be gained at Jack's awakening regarding what he is. He woke up in darkness. He can fly. And no one can see or interact with him. Clearly, he must be some manner of demon. Why else would he be trapped in this hellish existence? So Jack comes to the wrong conclusion early on about what he is (evil) and why he's there (to suffer).
