Wade Ripple was probably destined to have a bad relationship with Bernie Lumen. Even if he hadn't written the elder man thirty citations, likely shutting down the flame's lifelong pride and joy, they had met due to a lie. Bernie thought Wade had burst his pipes. Wade had ruined the grand re-opening of the Fireplace, even though he did it for noble reasons. Bernie had only cared about Wade’s apparent death because of how much Ember cared about Wade. Cindy had been able to see how much Wade and Ember were in love, but even that was mostly Ember’s doing - Wade couldn’t create flame on his own. Not to mention Bernie was probably the most important person in Ember’s life until Wade. Wade had plenty of reasons to fear his girlfriend’s father.
