Summary

Lucius Spriggs is an open book. Everyone on the ship knows everything there is to know about Lucius, about how everything on heaven and sea is in his sketches' purview, about how he loves easily and rashly and recklessly.Yet when they take their bimonthly trip to the Republic of the Pirates, no one expects someone to ask for him by name.Frenchie and Wee John reach the pier only to find a woman standing by the gangplank, a roll of paper in one satiny brown hand.“Might we ask what you’re doing loitering by our ship, ma’am?” Frenchie asks, polite as can be.The woman blinks, her brow furrowing. “I was told I needed to find the ship captained by Stede Bonnet. You wouldn’t know a Lucius Spriggs, would you?”"We've really got to spread Captain Olu's reputation around better-" Frenchie says before her words process and his jaw drops.  “What might a girl want with a ship's scribe?"“Melanie Spriggs,” the girl says, sticking out a hand to shake. All of a sudden the girl’s nose, jaw, and sharp smile seem far too familiar for comfort. “I came to tell my brother that our parents finally kicked the bucket."(An old face from Lucius' past returns, but might end up sticking around.)
