Summary

Nobara was six years old when they had their first taste of the soft, sponge-like sustenance called a birthday cake. Or at least, they were the equivalent of a six-year-old human child, as Saori had tried to explain to them once.

Nobara hadn’t really understood what it meant at that time. Didn’t fully comprehend the weight of words like equivalent, birthday, and child, or even human for that matter.

All she knew then, all she had cared about in that moment, was that Saori—kind, beautiful Saori—had noticed the fascination, the curious wonderment in both Yuuji’s and Nobara’s own voice. Had heard their not-so-offhanded comments of “I wonder what does the colour pink taste like?” and “You looked pretty happy eating those squishy… um, macaroons? in the photo. Why don’t you ever eat those here, Saori-chan?”

And days later, the three of them stepped through the sliding doors of the observation room to find a pink and white cake placed on the table.
