When school does end, finally, Fig always wordlessly heads off to her room for a quick nap, foregoing the afternoon, post-school snack that Jawbone prepares for the household. She’d rather sleep than eat at most times. Her nap is her alone time, her quiet time when she can shut off her brain and stop putting on a show for the people around her. It’s not out of her routine when she drags herself up the stairs to get to her room, her backpack having been discarded in the living room in favor of not having to haul it up with her.What is out of her routine, though, is when she finally stumbles her way into her room, closing and locking the door behind her, and her eyes fall on the sight of Ayda curled up as tightly as Fig has ever seen her, resting on Fig’s bed but not comfortably under the covers or relaxed in any way.
