Summary
“You look good.” Where Buck had once put a flirtatious spin on the words, now there was only a quiet sincerity.
“You too,” she said, her breath caught by the newness of him.
In her head, for all these years, Buck was frozen as he had been at the airport, young and tragic eyed, mouth firmed to keep from trembling, bleeding adoration in her wake. But Buck wasn’t some half-forgotten ghost; he was living and changing, same as her. He had settled into his long legged body, more sturdy now rather than lanky, easy in his skin as he never been at twenty-six. He was still handsome—beautiful, if she was being honest—but his face had lost that hunger-panged edge, soft and sweetened with age. She did the math; he was over thirty. Still young, but no longer achingly, ruinously so.
In which Abby returns to LA and its ghosts.
