Buck can remember being excited about Guides and Sentinels when he was a kid. His mom was a Sentinel and his dad was a Guide, so the likelihood of him being one or the other was fairly high — and, more importantly, Maddie was a Sentinel. So he thought it might be cool to be a Sentinel, but what he really wanted to be was a Guide, so he could be Maddie’s Guide and help her and they’d always be together. Even as a kid he’d known that Sentinel-Guide pairs didn’t have to be romantic to work, and he couldn’t imagine ever loving anyone else as much as he loved his big sister. After he came online he had about twenty-four hours to be excited about being a Guide before the rug was pulled out from under his feet.
