Summary
The Guanli Ceremony was a deeply symbolic ritual in which the "crown" (guan) was not merely an ornament, but a visible sign of a person's radical change in status within society. After the guan was put on, an honored guest would bestow upon the youth his adult name. From that moment on, he was addressed by this new name, which emphasized his new social status. Addressing him by his childhood name was considered disrespectful.
