Summary

Carolyn wanted to get away from the stuffy great house and the winds, or, as some said, the widows. She plodded along in her brand-new bright yellow raincoat towards the ledge outside, the one Mother had always warned her about. Watch your step, her mother’s voice and the voices of impossible women, ones she had never known, warned her. Carolyn was sure there was nothing to fear from the ghosts, after all they were family, but ghosts were still awful scary for a girl at six.
