Summary

“You must be truly desperate if you need my help.” Jason says in disbelief. “Or truly broke.”

“Or maybe you’re too fucking good to go out the way you did and I’m trying to build something with the chance I’ve got away from that skinflint Nutting.” Shelton shrugs. “Between me, you, and my dog napping by my feet, I’m not all that hung up on keeping Julien as my main guy at second. Sure he’s young and he can be taught. But I can spend a season or more teaching him, or I can get a seasoned vet to teach him and keep shit together when he’s falling apart.”

Jason laughs, a little bitterly. “A seasoned vet that hasn’t played in five years and is older than active players who are retiring.”

“Nice self pity. You get that from your mama?”

This time, it’s a bark of laughter and it’s genuine, Jason startled and wondering what on earth this guy’s deal is. “Shelton-”

“Kipnis.” Shelton mocks. “Look, I’m not promising anything. If you choke, you choke. But you won’t. Show up to spring training, I’ll have the front office reach out to your agent.”

“Shelton-”

“See you in February.”
