Somewhere In South Hawkins

In Hawkins, Indiana, everyone knows who Steve Harrington is—and who Jonathan Byers isn’t. Steve is perfect: perfect hair, perfect friends, perfect at sports, with a perfect girlfriend in Nancy Wheeler. Jonathan lives on the other side of Hawkins, quiet and observant, convinced that wanting Nancy makes sense of everything he doesn’t understand about himself. They despise each other on sight. Steve sees Jonathan as a threat he shouldn’t have to worry about—poor, strange, always watching. Jonathan knows that Steve is exactly what’s wrong with Hawkins: loud, cruel, and untouchable. What neither of them can admit is how closely they pay attention to each other, how personal the resentment feels, how it lingers long after it should have faded. In a town that doesn’t offer boys like them the words—or the space—to understand what they’re feeling, hatred becomes the safest place to put it. Somewhere in South Hawkins, the line between loathing and something else begins to blur.
