“It’s menthol,” Will says.
“What?”
“Menthol. That’s the cooling ingredient in the gel patch.” His thumb goes over Mike’s forehead, resting just on top of the thin rectangle coolness. The touch makes his mouth dry. “I heard they’re doing cryo-electron microscopy to test it out again, but that’s my main theory on why it works so well.”
“Cool,” Mike replies.
He can still see the smear of baby blue gel under Will’s fingertip when he pulls away, no longer close enough to feel, close enough to touch. That thought makes him feel far more parched than anything a fever can do.
“Cool.”
