This is a biography of Caranthir I wrote for the SWG. I am no longer there, but I cannot take my work down so I am posting it here too. I have taken down the references, but I used The Silmarillion and the HoMe book to write this.

Himring is probably the coldest place that Maeglin has ever been. He tries to put away that thought, and not to shiver very visibly as he glances up through his lashes at Maedhros Fëanorion. Terrible and fell, his father had always said were the sons of Fëanor, and Maeglin can believe it. Of course, his mother’s stories had been different. But they had been few and far between. Above, Maedhros shifts forwards in his high seat with a slight rustling of heavy robes, and Maeglin trembles involuntarily. Out of the cold, he promises himself. Only the cold. “You wish to leave Gondolin,” rasps the lord of Himring, with no small amount of incredulity in his voice. “To come here?”

“I would not have watched him burn,” says Feanáro, and he hates the weight of the words in his voice, as heavy as a thousand stones. “I would not watch my own son burn alive.”[Canon divergent AU, where Amrod burns but lives, Fingolfin’s host never crosses the Helcaraxe but still reaches Beleriand, and Feanor goes a little- just the tiniest bit, for spice- insane.]

He seemed to feel her staring. He rolled over and regarded her, heavy-lidded. The eyes beneath the long lashes were glittering dark and knowing, the eyes of a grown man in the face of a beardless youth fair as a girl. It was the face of a young god or a dream-vision. Were they all like this, the Elves of this west country? Ye gods! This ill-spoken prince hadn’t even been the prettiest one at the party.
