There’s a distinct smell of mold wafting down the hallway. It’s so different from the hardwood floor polish-scented, dusty-curtain-air that fills the Arconian. Mabel Misses that smell. She misses her aunt’s apartment, she Misses being able to see her old man friends on a moment’s notice. She misses the Diner around the corner, the walk to the Subway station. She even misses Uma’s foul mood whenever they run into each other. And the stupid sound of the elevator ding.This house has no elevator ding. The cabin just softly jostles to a halt and spits you out into the nondescript corridor where everything looks the same and smells vaguely moldy. But all things considered, it’s not a terrible place. And she’s not half-mad to be here, either. It’s different, sure, but it’s… nice. Actually, the feeling even this sad corridor evokes in her this instant feels a lot like the Arconian does. It feels like home. Mabel knows, however, it’s not this building which gives her that feeling.
