"I remember how irritating I must have been," Gróin muses, "and the more I think on't, the more amazed I am that Fundin never tried to kill me." Every great Dwarven warrior must train with a blade to become so great. With a clingy younger brother who apparently wants to prove his worth, Fundin doesn't expect to get much done in that area.

One of the images which repels me from the moronic eye-candy which is The Hobbit by Peter Jackson (I had the misfortune of watching AUJ) is Dwalin's male pattern baldness. Tolkien clearly stated - "dwarves never go bald". This little fic tries to reconcile one of PJ's countless brainfarts with canon.

It was at that moment that Bilbo Baggins rode up beside Dwalin. “Excuse me,” the Hobbit began politely, trying to stir conversation. Dwalin grunted as he smoothed out the mane of his pony. “Ahem, mm...I was just admiring your...uh...” Bilbo faltered, for he didn’t quite know what to call the objects clamped to the giant Dwarf’s wrists. Dwalin gave Bilbo a sideways glance. He straightened and spoke in a deep, rolling voice: “Hurkumalak.”

Sarnalthmîn: "Cause to abuse" Many things are NOT wrong with the sons of Fundin, but they must unfairly learn that some Dwarves are superstitious to the point of paranoia and will resort to pain in order to "fulfill" their wild ideas.

“The heart is a fickle and foolish thing,” he replied instead. “I cannot afford to trust my own. Not when wisdom is firm, and so definitively defies it.”Balin laughed, and with such mirth that he startled the king for a moment, and caused him to worry that he might have been misheard.“Oh, what nonsense that is,” the old dwarf responded good-naturedly. “It’s quite the opposite. How else could it be that the passage of time might wipe the memory of a person from your mind so cleanly that even their face may one day be obscured from you, yet it is your heart which never grows tired of missing them?“Did you know, I quite forgot my mother’s name the other day, and I very nearly had to ask my brother for it before it came to me all of a sudden. Still, I cannot eat lamb without wishing it were made by her recipe, and every sunrise I see seems hardly more than a gentle shadow of the warmth she once brought me. She brings it to me still, though she has been gone a century yet. Love is not a physical thing. It is not so frail.”-- In the Half-Light of the Canyon, Chapter 17
