Hagrid looks down at the small, sleeping baby cradled in his arms. His button nose is rose red, his cheeks are petal pink; the night around them is cold and sharp and unforgiving, like a blade hovering above the exposed throat of this tiny, perfect child.Hagrid looks again, at the plain stone step that Headmaster Dumbledore had pointed to. This step is cold, too, and hard, and Hagrid thinks that only the most hardy and world-worn of beasts could sleep on that step. Not a baby. Never a baby.So Hagrid looks again at this empty, uncaring stone step, and then the slumbering infant in his arms, and he thinks that no, this is not the proper care of a very precious magical creature. This shall not stand. So he does something he's never done before: he tells Headmaster Dumbledore no.

Hagrid can't give Harry to the Dursleys. He just can't. He knew what Petunia was like and he couldn't hand Harry over to her. So he decides to raise Harry instead, with the help of Severus Snape who he has been looking after since the younger man had started at Hogwarts, I mean, no one else would. Of course, things aren't always easy when raising a toddler in Hogwarts. Especially when he won't stop calling Severus 'mum' no matter what the man does, and when the Headmaster won't stop trying to send the boy to Petunia. But, Harry brings a unity to the school that hasn't been seen in decades and maybe, just maybe, when the Dark Lord rises again, they might just be able to stop him.I don't own Harry Potter.Rest in peace Robbie Coltrane and Alan Rickman!

Hagrid stepped back and bowed his head in defeat, his shoulders slumped. Harry watched agog as the door closed. He gasped, "Hagrid, no!""That did happen," Harry blinked in surprise and turned to see Tom approaching him from the other end of the hallway, confused as he had witnessed Tom and Hagrid in the room, and the door closed. Tom stopped before Harry and looked down, "Harry, that," he looked over his shoulder, gesturing to the door that closed, "Was not me."

Hagrid crosses paths with Sirius at the smoldering ruins of the Potter's home. Instead of going after Peter the rat immediately, Sirius tells Hagrid his plan, giving Hagrid the chance to knock some sense into him. When he still tries to leave Harry with Hagrid, well, it's a good thing Sirius brought his motorbike. How would Hagrid be able to transport Harry and his unconscious godfather to safety otherwise?

Instead of Sirius Black, the clever and smart James and Lilly Potter chose a very different godfather for their special son. If Voldemort managed to kill them, they reasoned, then it would take someone really strong and really clever to protect their child. Someone no one would expect. They chose two names at first, but finally they settled on the later option. Their reasoning was that even less people would suspect Hagrid the half-giant of being Harry Potter’s godfather than they would Severus Snape. In public Sirius Black was the boy’s godfather, but the actual magic and paper was filled in with Rubeus Hagrid’s name.Even the Potters could not have expected how this would change the infant Harry Potter’s life. After all, Hagrid trusted Dumbledore with almost everything. Almost being the key word. For to Hagrid his creatures came before everything else, even himself. And to a half-Giant, Humans were little more than another type of creature.
