At age nineteen, after falling in love with Henry Thomas Dundas Le Vesconte and wishing to marry him, George Hodgson had been persuaded by his parents’ dearest friend, godfather, and his confidante, the widow Sir McDonald, to break the engagement. McDonald had questioned the prudence of George marrying a penniless young naval officer without any prominent family or connections and whose prospects were so uncertain so early in his career. After George breaks off the engagement, both men are left bitter and heartbroken. Eight years later, due to the excessive spending, his family must leave their home and offer temporary residence to Admiral Crozier and Vice Admiral Fitzjames, who is the brother of, now Captain Le Vesconte who joins them upon their return to land. Their ill-fated reunion brings their lives crashing back together in the most irrevocable ways and causing events unforeseen, all while avoiding each other as much as possible because neither can address the past, the present, or the future.
