“So, boys,” Sam says, when Henry shoots him a suspicious look. “Ready for the big day?” If it had been left to Pike and to Henry, this wouldn’t have been a particularly notable day, but their plan to go to a justice of the peace went up in smoke as soon as their family and friends heard about it.

Out of nowhere Henry decided a boy as kind and sensitive as Pike shouldn’t be outcasted, even if he hadn’t made any efforts to be included. “What about Pike Dexter?” And at that everyone at the table looked at him with funny looks. John seemed to be trying to remember the name to a face and the rest of them looked at him almost offended. Pike turns 16 today. He wasn’t planning on doing anything. Henry invites Pike to a party, and they become friends.
