“He’s the one we’re looking at,” says Iverson. “Shirogane. He’s the one for Kerberos.” Sam Holt isn’t quite so certain. After all, it takes more than good test scores and a charming smile to be a pilot. But Shiro’s got a habit of upsetting expectations.

Samuel Holt has loved the stars his entire life, despite where he ended up because of it. Ironically it's not until after his rescue that he starts to hate their gentle gleam in the darkness, a cruel reminder of everything he's lost.

"You...know who I am?" the pilot said. "If you're Adam Whittaker, I do," Sam confirmed. "What can I do for you?" "I was just...wondering. You reported that the...the Voltron Paladins sent messages home to their families. By any chance, did...did Officer Shirogane send a video?"The thread connecting Adam and Shiro was not cut, only stretched. It passes through the one person who could carry their unspoken messages: Sam Holt.

Sam couldn’t blame the bluntness. Stories of orphan kids too young getting mixed up in the wrong crowd weren’t unheard of. Boys and girls in the system grew to become thieves, suffering from rape, murder, and even darker themes which were covered under “unfortunate accidents” and never brought to light for what they truly were. Crimes of neglect. Of kids too bright to be facing the world alone, a world that dulls their shine until all that’s left is a shell of what they could have been. He could only pray for Takashi’s safety. __ in which Takashi Shirogane finds a family with the Holts.

Shiro’s nightmares aren’t always the same, but often they’re predictable. He knows when he’s going to have particularly ugly ones; after a rough battle, if he or one of the other paladins takes an injury, he’ll see it replayed in his dreams over and over. But there are also nights with no blood or injuries or arena sand. There are nights he dreams of things from longer ago; of being small, of fitting himself beneath beds and in closets. Instead of the witch’s scratchy voice or the screams of a jeering crowd, he only hears his father’s voice.

It was all going fine until they got in the elevator.OR, physical therapy isn't optional, Sam is a Good Dad, Shiro isn't the most patient person in the world, and Matt is definitely no longer a big fan of small dark spaces.
