Taking place in the world of Flowers from the Storm (1992), Steve Rogers has been stolen away from London where James Barnes, the Duke of Jervaulx, has abandoned his arranged marriage to a stranger, a woman afraid of the monster James has become after a stroke rendered his ability to speak and understand others challenging and infuriating. The only person in the world who believes James is still a man, still a conscious human being inside his body, is Steve Rogers, the quaker son of the mathematician he knew and worked with before his stroke. The quaker has deemed aiding James through his recovery a Purpose given to him by God. For James, the only concepts that come easy to him now are numbers and his name - Stevie. With his greedy family desperate to stripe him of his title, his fortune, and his sanity chasing him, James drags his nurse and only lifeline to his friend Natasha's estate in northern England where they are to hide away and work on his recovery. Steve, however, is desperate to return home to his blind father who he has cared for all his life. Steve contemplates how to broach their separation as he searches for warmth.
