“We should call the police.” His voice was croaky when at last Miles spoke. “There’s an emergency phone a bit further up,” he gestured vaguely toward the top of the sand. “And say what?” Davy’s aggression lasted, even as grief withered his face as he turned and took the four steps that placed him beside Miles. “That you just swam out into the middle of the bay with your sick friend and drowned him in the waves?” “No,” Bill spoke up, lower than the two of them as he remained crouched down with James’ head on his lap. “We do what Jim wanted; we tell them what he said to tell them.” “It’s a lie.” Davy said with teeth gritted and wide eyes refusing to dry.

“You think I want him to die?” Bill asked, tugging firmly on Davy’s arm until Davy stumbled forwards, back toward the sand, water kicked about around them. “I don’t want this, mate, I don’t want to let him go but I don’t know what it is to be him, Davy. But last night? That was horrible and if he’s living with that, every moment of every day, I’m not going to be the one to tell him he can’t make this choice.” His breathing was laboured, his eyes flicking between Davy’s wet, distraught face and the flickering, shrinking silhouettes of Miles and James out in the bay.
