He had never been a fan of the cold. Even if it was nothing more than a chill wind slipping under the door, he hated it. Winters were a nightmare, snow his worst enemy. Ice was to keep food and drinks cool, not to be seen crisscrossing window panes in delicate flowers. He got too cold too easily. Just the onset of winter had him coughing, a lingering trace of the damage fire had gifted him. Fire and cold. Two opposites. Both determined to ruin his damn life. Kage stumbled against a tree, fingers scraping against the rough surface of the bark. He could barely feel it. His hands were numb. Through the flurries, he could see the tips of them, blue against the dark bark. With a frozen curse, he snatched his hand back, put it to his armpit, as if there might be some lingering warmth there that could unfreeze him. He doubted it. It felt like ice was in his veins. Each movement sent little needle jabs through him, his body’s protest against the treatment. He was lucky he hadn’t started coughing yet. That, however, was just a matter of time. He had no hope this reprieve from his coughing fits would last longer than the storm. If he didn’t die first, of course.
