When studying ancient languages and linguists, Helen Sinclair hadn't imagined taking her skills to an army base, but there she was. Everyone was doing their bit to help the war effort, and when she had been called upon to assist the special military branch UNIT with breaking codes, she could hardly refuse. Alongside another civilian specialist - the brilliant tech-whiz Petronella Osgood - she finds herself in the unfamiliar world of the military. Brigadier Kate Stewart turns out to be a kind, admirable leader and as Helen is eager to exceed expectations, she pushes herself above and beyond. When she collapses from exhaustion, she's taken to UNIT's medical officer.
