Summary
If it's one thing that everyone knew about David, it was that he never cried. It wasn't that he was cold-hearted or that he was always happy, it was just the fact that he had learned to bury his emotions down a long time ago. He was used to caring for himself, and there had never been anyone there to comfort him when he was younger. So, David just learned over time that he had to bury his emotions, to be the strong one so he could comfort his friends and family in a way that he never got the chance of having.
So, that's why the Newsies always came to him if they needed a shoulder to cry on. Of course, the boys would always deny their little breakdown after it was over, but David never hesitated to be that source of comfort in his friend's darker times. The Newsies always joked that David was their "mother" because of how much he coddled the boys. David couldn't help it, he cared for the Newsies like they were his brothers. In his eyes, they were the brothers that he would die protecting.
