It’s what makes this real, that he didn’t leave her; that she lost him.Aubrey looks over and sees that Hero is a mess. Mari is stroking his back while he cries on her chest, smaller than she’s ever seen him before. Their children made the funeral arrangements on her behalf, knowing she was too distraught over how it happened. She thinks she must have been the last to realize just how unwell he had been. She decides to look at him in the casket, even though she’s afraid she’s going to react like before with a crowd, but she’s glad she does. She reaches her hands down to tuck the stray hairs he usually bobby pins behind his ears and smiles.“You never did get that haircut.”
