Summary
“You love him,” Pepa says, one night, smiling at Eddie, calm and certain and so steady, as if it’s not the sort of revelation that blows Eddie’s world apart.
They sit in silence on the back porch, watching Buck with Christopher in Pepa’s backyard. Eddie’s hands are frozen, wrapped tight around the chipped coffee mug in his hands. His drink has been cold for a while now.
'I do,' he wants to say, 'You’re right, I do love him. I love him more than I’ve ever loved anyone, except maybe Christopher. I love him like I’ve never loved any friend, in ways that I’m not sure I even loved Shannon, and she was my wife. I love him in ways that I didn’t even know were possible, in ways I never could have imagined. You’re right, I do love him, and he has no idea.'
