Summary
Kaz's plan goes just slightly awry. Inej makes a sacrifice.----Kaz is seized by the entirely inane urge to grab hold of Inej’s shoulder; to turn her chin gently upward to face him. She deserves reassurance he does not have time for and comfort he cannot provide. “Inej, look at me,” he says instead. She doesn’t. He says it again. “Look at me.”
This time, she does. He waits until she’s met his eyes to say anything more. Hers are dark as ever, glistening with tears, flashing with firelight from the candles all around them. Those eyes wait for consolation; they wait for salvation. Kaz can offer her neither.
