Nojiko used to be bullied.

She was an orphan with a sister who looked nothing like her and an adoptive mom who smoked cigarettes, swore, and shaved her hair. Nojiko’s family was nothing anyone in Cocoyashi had ever seen. As such, the boys would throw rocks at her and Nami on their way to school and the girls would gossip by the corners of the schoolhouse.
