Racing is expensive. The car is the most obvious large expense, followed closely by its insurance. Cal is acutely aware of everything that costs money. He may be friendly with his crew, but they’re paid to be there. Car maintenance isn’t free, neither is fuel and nor is renting out tracks for practice. The mere act of registering for races comes with dozens of hidden fees and, hell, even Cal’s personal affects - his race-suit and protective gear - cost more than ten grand.Cal needs the Dinoco sponsorship - he can't race without it - but Monty, his boyfriend, wants it too. They can't both win.
