Summary

In the desert of Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1878, Tomohiro Takeda, veteran of the Boshin War and caravan protection, is felled at the hands of an American bandit; a demon, he believes, able to rise from the ground after a killing blow, and he is not alone. Tomohiro finds that, unbeknownst to him, being not entirely human makes him difficult to fell himself. Aided by an old god of Vengeance, Tezcatlipoca, he pulls himself from the grave and enlists the help of a local bounty hunter to kill the bandit and his gang, though even with their esoteric knowledge, this may be more difficult than imagined.Modesto Luna Reyes is a bounty hunter and former revolutionary looking to make (or borrow) enough money to fund his habit of drowning his failures in drink, sex, or wanton gunfights. Though Modesto considers himself a decent Catholic, if a bit wanting in virtue, he finds the aid of a pagan god along with an Eastern mercenary tempting in pursuit of a bounty as high as that on the head of Jeremiah Young, the infamous bandit from the American Midwest. On their way, Tomo, Modesto, and Tez stumble across other such supernatural, or merely human, threats and allies on the road and confront their histories with each other.
