His dad said “Pat, pack up right now. I'm sending you to a boarding school.”
Pat almost wanted to laugh. He remembered a few years ago when his parents would often throw this line around when he refused to eat his vegetables or clean up his room. But he was no longer at an age that was a viable threat. And then it hit him- he's no longer at an age it was an empty threat.
“Mom,” he looked helplessly.
“Just go to your room, son. I'll talk to you in a bit.”
She didn't deny it. She didn't say he wasn't going. “Mom?” The desperation and panic were starting to set in.
“Please go to your room, Pat. I promise it'll be okay.”
