Summary
Albus Dumbledore takes his duties as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry very seriously. He considers it to be his crowning achievement, and hopes that it will define his legacy. Indeed, it is his greatest desire that his role in the downfall of Tom Riddle be nothing more than a footnote in his biography compared to the good he did at that beloved school.
Severus Snape has always played a complicated role, particularly with regard to where those legacies overlap. Yes, he played a role in the defeat of the self-titled "Lord Voldemort", and sure, he is a gifted wizard and exceptional potioneer. It is only natural for him to teach at Hogwarts, where he can pass his talents onto a new generation under Dumbledore's careful watch.
But one hears rumors. Naturally, students always seem to have a bone to pick with even the best teachers, but those complaints seem to arise with respect to Professor Snape with alarming frequency. And when stories circulate the school about how Professor Snape is not just a bad teacher, but indeed a student's deepest, darkest fear...
Albus cannot sit idly by.
