Summary

"Ace and Sabo are the best big brothers in the world!" Luffy shouts, directly into Sabo's ear.

"Luffy—" Ace starts as Sabo corrects with a "Brother and sister."

"Eh?" Luffy lets go, head tilted like a confused dog. Sabo turns to Ace, but given his expectant look he has clearly already deferred this task to Sabo like the asshole he is.

She sighs, facing Luffy and trying to mentally prepare herself for the Sisyphean task of explaining literally anything to Luffy.

"Well, you know," Except Luffy doesn't know and the more Sabo tries to grasp gendered terms in a way that won't just confuse Luffy more, the more nebulous the whole concept becomes in her mind. Simple as simple can be, then. "You call it brothers for boys and sisters for girls."

Luffy tilts his head in the opposite direction. "Huh? So we're sisters then?"

"Er, no, sisters is when it's two girls." Luffy blinks, entirely uncomprehending.

"So me 'n Sabo are brother and sister." Ace adds, and Sabo nods along with complete, unjustified confidence.

OR: ASL sisters somehow make it through childhood each thinking that they are the only girl and that the others are boys. It changes less than you'd think.
