Summary
Definition: A philosophy of love prevalent in medieval literature and originated in the lyrics of troubadours (eleventh and twelfth century), referring to love practiced among nobility. A man would fall in love with a woman's beauty, and if she were to return the favor he would subject himself to her whims and pleasures. Courtly love does not lead to marriage and the love is usually in secret. There are two derivatives of courtly love.
